Screw Ong Bak 2, Watch Chocolate

I’m not a fan of Ong Bak. Tony Jaa is a great stuntman, but his personality does nothing for me, and the film’s blatant show-off tendencies really get to me.

That said, Ong Bak 2 is coming this month, and it’s a total piece of shit. Jaa attempted to make, quit, disappeared, reappeared, cried on TV, feared for his life, and returned to make an incoherent mess of a demo reel with bullshit sped-up fight scenes. Jaa is obviously good enough to not have to do that, and if you look at martial art film history, there have been plenty of stars whose films also managed to have engaging plots.

Anyway, I’m getting off-topic. I just watched Chocolate, the third major film from the Ong Bak director, and outside of a slight bit of bullshit speed-up, it’s pretty darn fun. Director Prachya Pinkaew learned from his mistakes and has action flow more naturally without stopping to brag about it, star JeeJa Yanin has a very natural charisma, and it has Hiroshi Abe!

I guess those paragraphs are just an excuse to post a fight scene, but whatever. Fuck Ong Bak 2, but you’ll all see it anyway. Just be sure not to pass by Chocolate.
