Bands don’t get much cooler than Thee Michelle Gun Elephant. Formed in 1991, their name comes from the combination of a mispronunciation of The Damned’s Machine Gun Etiquette album and the band Thee Headcoats.

The band became one of the more widely known Japanese music acts when The Brian Jonestown Massacre saw their gig in Los Angeles and got them signed to Alive Records, and they later provided music for the modern Japanese classic Blue Spring. They disbanded in 2003, but vocalist Chiba Yusuke has since formed ROSSO and The Birthday.
