J-Rock Sunday: Number Girl

I was just recently pointed towards this fantastic band by our buddy Andrew. Formed in 1995, Number Girl has been a highly influential force in indie Japanese rock, and they feature one of the greatest drummers of the modern rock era, Inazawa Ahito, who’s so bad-ass that during the band’s first show in Tokyo, he had a high fever and performed the entire show while hooked up to an IV.

After disbanding in 2002 following bassist Nakao Kentarou’s departure, the members went on to form bands such as Zazen Boys, Vola and the Oriental Machine, toddle, and Sloth Love Chunks.

While most of their videos are strange and feature recurring characters, their live performances are what’s really worth watching.
