Sound Unseen 2008 Film Line-Up

posted by The Joe

Minneapolis’ 9th Sound Unseen film & music festival has announced their film line-up, though a few more might possibly be added by the time the festival starts.

- Anvil! The Story of Anvil – At 14, best friends Robb Reiner and Lips made a pact to rock together forever. Their band, Anvil, hailed as the “demi-gods of Canadian metal, ” influenced a musical generation that includes Metallica, Slayer, and Anthrax, despite never hitting the big time. Following a calamitous European tour, Lips and Robb, now in their fifties, set off to record their 13th album in one last attempt to fulfill their boyhood dreams.

- Dead Man – William Blake (Johnny Depp) travels to the extreme western frontiers of America sometime in the 2nd half of the 19th century. Lost and badly wounded, he encounters a very odd, outcast Native American, named “Nobody,” who believes Blake is actually the dead English poet of the same name. Directed by Jim Jarmusch with a score by Neil Young.

- Garrison Keillor: The Man on the Radio in the Red Shoes – America’s foremost humorist and commentator, Garrison Keillor, takes his skits and jokes, music and monologues across the country in his traveling radio show, spinning his stories into American gold. This free-form, intimate look at the private man in the public spotlight, travels with Keillor to small towns and big, going behind-the-scenes of America’s most popular radio show, “A Prairie Home Companion”.

- The Gits – Just as the punk rock group The Gits were poised to explode onto the national music scene, an unfathomable tragedy struck. Without warning, this promising band faced a horrific end and the fabric that built this tight knit music community began to unravel. This film celebrates the band’s enduring musical legacy while embracing the soul of the legendary Mia Zapata and the love that so many hold in their hearts for a band that continues to touch lives.

- Heavy Metal in Baghdad – In the late summer of 2006, in the middle of the insurgency, filmmakers Eddy Moretti and Suroosh Alvi traveled to Baghdad to meet and interview the only heavy metal band in Iraq, Acrassicauda. Their struggle is the untold story of the hopes and dreams of an entire generation of young Iraqis.

- Largo – Those who have experienced the joy of attending a live performance at the intimate Los Angeles club where Patton Oswalt, Zach Galifanakis, Sarah Silverman, Aimee Mann, and Fiona Apple frequently perform can now find out why it’s one of Hollywood’s best-kept secrets thanks to this feature collaboration between club owner Mark Flanagan and filmmaker Andrew van Baal.

- Low: You May Need a Murderer – Dutch filmmaker David Kleijwegt followed the American indie chamber-rock act Low around for nearly a month to create this portrait-style documentary that tracks the at-home and on-the-road activities of band members Alan Sparhawk and Mimi Parker. But the film isn’t just about the music; it’s also about the Mormoan church’s role in Sparhawk and Parker’s work, the spiritual state of modern-day America and the power of love.

- Nerdcore Rising – An investigation of the newest wave of hip-hop, nerdcore, as it follows the godfather of the genre, MC Frontalot, on his first national tour. Masses of fans across the country come out to bask in the Front’s geek glory as he strives to achieve mainstream success.

- Note By Note: The Making of Steinway L1037 – A feature-length independent documentary that follows the creation of a Steinway concert grand, #L1037. It explores the relationship between musician and instrument, chronicles the manufacturing process, and investigates what makes each Steinway unique.

- Of All the Things – Dennis Lambert was one of the most successful and diverse songwriter/producers of the ’70s and ’80s, with hits like “Ain’t No Woman Like The One I’ve Got” and “Rhinestone Cowboy”. He had chart-toppers in almost every genre of music, and at one point four of his songs were simultaneously on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, a feat previously accomplished only by The Beatles. Today, he’s a 60-year-old family man selling real estate in Florida. But it turns out his obscure 1972 solo album is still huge – in the Philippines. A Filipino concert promoter has been begging Dennis to tour for decades, and in 2007, he finally agreed.

- Sigur Ros: Heima – In the summer of 2006, Sigur Rós returned home to play a series of free, unannounced concerts for the people of Iceland. This film documents their already legendary tour with intimate reflections from the band and a handful of new acoustic performances.

- Sonic Youth: Sleeping Nights Awake – A documentary on Sonic Youth shot entirely by seven high school students and featuring interviews, backstage footage, and 10 songs performed live.

- Wholphin Shorts – Collected shorts from the Wholphin DVDs, including the great Patton Oswalt/David Byrne film.
