NBC’s Fear Itself Replaces Showtime’s Masters of Horror

I’d heard about NBC’s upcoming horror anthology Fear Itself being similar to Showtime’s better-in-idea-than-execution Masters of Horror, but I guess it’s an actual replacement, with much of the same talent jumping ship to network television.

The directors lined up include Stuart Gordon (Re-Animator), Brad Anderson (The Machinist), Mary Harron (American Psycho), Darren Bousman (a bunch of Saws), Ronny Yu (Bride of Chucky), and John Landis (American Werewolf in London).

Some of the writers are Masters of Horror creator Mick Garris, Steven Soderbergh collaborator Lem Dobbs (The Limey, Dark City), Steve Niles (30 Days of Night), Victor Salva (Jeepers Creepers), and the team of Drew McWeeny (aka AICN‘s Moriarty) and Scott Swan, who wrote the best Masters of Horror episode, the John Carpenter-directed Cigarette Burns.

While maybe this restraining change will cause directors to focus more on story than gore and T&A, I can’t imagine anything like Takashi Miike’s Imprint episode ever getting greenlit for NBC.

Fear Itself plays Thursdays at 10 PM Eastern, starting May 29.
