The Ghost in the Shell anime, both the Mamoru Oshii films and the Stand Alone Complex series, are the pinnacle of the medium – unbelievably smart, intricate, and gorgeous. Something I just don’t feel a live-action American remake would be.

But alas, DreamWorks has just acquired rights to the property with plans to adapt it as a 3-D live-action feature. The script will be penned by Jamie Moss, who wrote . . . *sigh* . . . Street Kings.

Apparently, Steven Spielberg took personal interest in nabbing the property. ” ‘Ghost in the Shell’ is one of my favorite stories,” he said. “It’s a genre that has arrived, and we enthusiastically welcome it to DreamWorks.

DreamWorks prexy of production Adam Goodman also said that Ghost in the Shell is a property “that epitomizes 3-D live-action motion picture possibilities.

According to Variety, The story follows the exploits of a member of a covert ops unit of the Japanese National Public Safety Commission that specializes in fighting technology-related crime.
