Greatest Bootlegs of the Decade #6: Eli Eli Lema Sabachthani?
posted by The Joe
Here’s a cheery one for Christmas. Tadanobu Asano once again appears on this list as a musician whose noise music made out of found objects in the post-apocalypse is the only cure for a suicide disease. It’s definitely not for all tastes, as there’s a large dose of drone music and minimal dose of dialogue, but it’s one of the more interesting and beautiful works from vastly underrated director Shinji Aoyama.
The film tells the story of a semi-apocalyptic near-future where a visually transmitted virus causes people to become depressed and commit suicide. However, they say the only hope for overcoming the virus is through sound. One rich man wants nothing more than to save his only remaining granddaughter, so he attempts to enlist the help of a group of men who have overcome the illness by living in seclusion among the sounds of nature.
