This is All About Lily Chou-Chou.
I could’ve sworn Quentin Tarantino once named this one of his top films ever, but I guess he forgot about it when he named his favorite films of the last 20 years. Whatever. Shunji Iwai has a history of his films being overlooked, as Swallowtail remains the greatest still-unreleased-in-America film of the 90s, and now his All About Lily Chou-Chou has yet to appear on any Best Film list I’ve read.
Fuck. That.
Not only does Lily have one of the most outstanding soundtracks of any film since 2000, but it’s the most beautiful digital film ever made. Essentially a coming-of-age story, here’s the imdb synopsis . . . Life isn’t easy for a group of high school kids growing up in Japan’s pervasive pop/cyber culture. As they negotiate teen badlands- school bullies, parents from another planet, lurid snapshots of sex and death- these everyday rebels without a cause seek sanctuary, even salvation, through pop star savior Lily Chou-Chou, embracing her sad, dreamy songs and sharing their fears and secrets in Lilyholic chat rooms. Immersed in the speed of everyday troubles, their lives inevitably climax in a fatal collision between real and virtual identities, a final logging-off from innocence
Okay, sure, imdb. Anyway, it’s awesome. No film has better portrayed the new internet youth culture in a more breathtaking way, and it’s actually officially released in the U.S., so get to it. Right now.
