Earlier today, Twitch reported that Alex Proyas’ sci-fi/noir masterpiece Dark City was getting its long-awaited 10th anniversary re-release. There was an ad in Home Media Magazine advertising DVD and Blu-Ray editions of the film for July 29. Soon after, however, the ad disappeared from the Internet.

Writer David Goyer has been vocal about this new release for a while now, saying, “It’s coming out fairly soon [and will] probably have limited theatrical, but Im not sure,” he explained to Bloody Disgusting. “I have seen almost all of it and I took part in an over hour long making-of.” In addition to the special features, Goyer revealed that the re-release would have touched-up FX, a redone score, and longer cuts.

With Dark City being one of my all-time favorite films, I’ve been anxiously awaiting this for the last decade. When the film first hit theaters in 1998, Proyas immediately expressed frustration with the final cut, pointing out that it wasn’t his idea for the opening voice-over which strangely ruins one of the secrets of the film in the first minute.

I hope the disappearance of the ad doesn’t mean this is a false rumor, as it’d be a joy to see a director’s cut of the movie which Roger Ebert declared the Best Film of 1998.
