Ryuganji is reporting that Japanese director Kitano ‘Beat’ Takeshi will start shooting and starring in a new film this August which will focus on modern yakuza society.

This comes as a surprise, as Kitano has previously stated that he’d put that particular film genre (which made him internationally famous) behind him. While this led to such masterworks as Kikujiro and Dolls, his most recent self-referencing trilogy was the weakest work of his career, so this news is wholly welcome.
