Continuing his evolution after going solo with Before the Dawn Heals Us, French musician Anthony Gonzales’ M83 reins back the epic feel of previous albums for a more synth-pop love letter to the 80s. And with this in mind, Gonzales exceeds brilliantly in exactly what he set out to do. The album blends together in a dreamy haze, recalling teenage nostalgia without any semblance of cynicism which his earlier, harsher work would have been in danger of evoking. The slow-burn atmospherics are still apparent, of course, only now they’re blended with a stronger focus and song structure. While this won’t be what some fans expect after what’s come before, Saturdays=Youth shows that Gonzales can broaden his style in seemingly any way that seems fit to his vision.
