Favorite New Films: Vicky Cristina Barcelona

Outside of Takashi Miike, no director can keep up with the yearly output of Woody Allen. It was a bit expected when his work started to feel phoned in with that kind of schedule, but his recent jaunts around Europe have been breaths of fresh air. And just as he’s traveling back to New York with next year’s Whatever Works, he presents my favorite work of his since Sweet and Lowdown.

Woody now finds himself in Spain, and while he’s said the film could have been made just about anywhere, I could never imagine it in any other country. Spanish culture seeps through every frame of this film, making it one of the most visually gorgeous works of his career. I could also never imagine this without the unbelievably sexy charm of Javier Bardem and Penelope Cruz, as their complicated relationship and its consequences for Scarlett Johansson and Rebecca Hall provide a mature exploration of romance that only Woody Allen is capable of.

Vicky Cristina Barcelona is currently playing in Minneapolis at the Lagoon Cinema.
