Kathryn Bigelow has had a fascinating career in genre-hopping, from one of the greatest vampire film of the 80s (Near Dark), to one of the greatest sci-fi films of the 90s (Strange Days), to even the easily-mocked but absolutely gorgeous Point Break. So it would mean a lot to say that Hurt Locker is her crowning achievement. Which it is.

The Hurt Locker is also the best action film of the summer. Most summers, actually. Its chaotic bare bones of a plot fits perfectly with the chaotic nature of the subject, bringing to mind your vague recollection of what Catch 22 was like (though it’s been years since you last read it), only with not as much comedy and with more batshit crazy segments of nerve-racking tension.

The Hurt Locker is unbelievable. That’s all you need. Go see it.
