Favorite New Films: Nick & Norah’s Infinite Playlist

Congratulations, hipsters. You finally have a movie about you that doesn’t suck.

Mix CDs. Indie rock shows. Coffee shops. Tight clothes. Being in a band. Moping about relationships. Financially well-off Caucasian parents. It’s all here, capturing pretty much everything there is to know about the current ‘myspace’ generation. Except unlike mumblecore, it’s not self-fellating narcissism.

Strongly evoking the spirit of Can’t Hardly Wait, Nick & Norah’s Infinite Playlist works best when it meanders. The actual plot is fairly weak and forced, but it’s thankfully kept to a minimum for the sake of quiet, natural scenes between Michael Cera and Kat Dennings’ charmingly believable title characters. The goofy side stories and characters are what you’d expect from the genre, but the script, night cinematography, and a fantastic soundtrack make the film breathe and feel real, aspects sadly lacking from the usual lifeless teen comedy output.
