Favorite New Films: Inglourious Basterds

Fuck Pulp Fiction.

Much like Jackie Brown, Inglourious Basterds is far evolved from Quentin Tarantino’s career-making work, and will most likely face similar backlash. It’s talky where one expects action, chooses confined setpieces over epic battlegrounds, and gives its title characters the least amount of focus. But that’s just the director continuing to do what he always does; the unexpected.

Due to this unconventional approach (and also some remarkable acting), the film ends up succeeding as both an exhilarating testament to the power of cinema and a tension-wracked, slow-burn war piece that brings to mind Jean-Pierre Melville’s masterpiece Army of Shadows. As always with Tarantino, it’s well worth the wait.
