Favorite New Films: A Serious Man

posted by The Joe

A Serious Man is cinematic perfection.

The Coen Brothers’ latest masterpiece is the greatest deconstruction of suburban life since Joseph Heller’s Something Happened, but this is so much more than just simply that aspect. This darkest of dark comedies is unpredictable, unrelenting, and actually terrifying as it follows the downward spiral of a man attempting to find his place in the world. The Coens have never tossed so many themes and issues into one film before, and they juggle them effortlessly alongside pitch-perfect writing, music, editing, and cinematography. It’s a goddamn magnificent sight to behold.

Best film of the year? And one of the best of the decade? And maybe, just maybe one of the best American films ever? Yes indeedy.
