Holy shit, did anyone else watch South Park the other night? Probably the best episode they’ve done in at least the last few years. They manage to skewer both Japanese whalers and the ridiculously stupid and boring Discovery channel fishing shows. I know, I know, lots of people love those shows and the people on the boats put themselves in danger every day but… c’mon, it’s not that interesting.

The best part of this clip is when Stan scares off the Japanese by unveiling a Godzilla statue. Ha! This racism is killin’ me.

Silent Movie Night returns to the Hennepin Avenue United Methodist Church this weekend with the horror classic The Hands of Orlac. Organist Don Livingston will improvise the music, and there’s free popcorn too.

A concert pianist loses his hands in a railway accident. Replacement hands are transplanted onto him in an experimental procedure, but the hands are those of a recently-executed murderer. From now on the pianist is tortured by panic attacks and irrational fears, and he believes that with the hands of the murderer he has also gained the predisposition to killing.

Here’s Mac McCaughan playing the Superchunk track “Detroit Has a Skyline” at Housing Works Books in New York during a reading of the new Merge retrospective book Our Noise: The Story of Merge Records, the Indie Label that Got Big and Stayed Small.

Superchunk was one of those bands that I kinda missed the boat on. I knew a lot of people (mostly dudes who worked in record stores with me, go figure) who were really into them but I just never dug that deeply into their catalogue. I thought the songs were fine but I never really got the hype. Now, years later, I wish I would have given them more of a chance back then. I realize that Superchunk is fucking awesome and I really missed out by not listening to them.

I guess the up side is that now I get to enjoy all that shit for the first time whereas everyone else has grown tired of them. Hence, I win.
