Off of what just might be the best album of 2009, Forget the Night Ahead, out September 22.

Drunken Post is a feature on Switchblade Comb wherein The Joe and RichmanVA get wasted and post nonsensical / non topical videos or musings at very early hours of the morning.
Between Operation Ivy and Common Rider, Jesse Michaels formed a short lived and largely unknown punk rock band called Big Rig. They released a single 4 song EP that stands as one of my favorite albums of the late 80’s / early 90’s Berkeley “sound” that spawned such influential bands as Fifteen, Crimpshrine, Blatz, Jawbreaker, and Green Day.
If nothing else, listen to “Persistance”. It’s probably one of the top 5 best East Bay punk rock songs of all time.
The album is sadly out of print but thanks to youtube user Gilpow those of you who don’t own it can enjoy it now.
Big Rig – “Expansive Heart”
Big Rig – “Will Alone”
Big Rig – “New Fist”

So here I am, getting smashed off of wine and finally catching up on the Eureka 7 anime which is okay I guess but dammit, Check It Out! with Steve Brule was supposed to debut on Adult Swim tonight and I was staying up to watch it online, but I guess the whole schedule got mixed around and now it doesn’t even have a premiere date. Boo-urns to that.
So screw it, here’s some classic Steve Brule instead.
The 10th anniversary CD/DVD combo of the Get Up Kids amazing 1999 album will be available September 8.

Film prints for John Carpenter’s horror masterpiece The Thing have long been only available for reel-to-reel projectors, but now an all-new platter print has been struck up and it’s headed to the Uptown Theatre in December.

Chip-tune music, which is synthesized in real-time by video game console chips, has become fairly popular as of late, so I figured I’d touch on my favorite of the bunch, Usk. This one-man artist develops more club-sounding tracks than the experimental works that can be found in the same category, and was the first to release an album on 8-Bit Peoples. However, his newer works have abandoned the 8-bit sound.
Usk – “Shanghai Moon”

In keeping with The Joe’s death of rock n’ roll post deriding “boring bullshit Pitchfork ‘indie rock’ hipster” bands I thought it would be appropriate to dedicate this Drunken Post to rock n’ roll’s last great poet laureate, Warren Zevon. Before passing away in 2003 Zevon spent nearly 40 years battling, not only fleeting mainstream success, but also alcoholism, obsessive compulsive disorder, and ultimately a losing battle with cancer.
Most people will only remember him for his biggest hit, “Werewolves in London” but much like Kris Kristofferson, he was ultimately a songwriters songwriter, an artist who was never really embraced by the mainstream but loved and adored by true appreciators of music. During his career he wrote countless amazing songs and collaborated with such diverse artists as The Everly Brothers, Jackson Browne, Hunter S. Thompson, Bruce Springsteen, REM, and Emmylou Harris among others.
He was a classical trained musician, a drunk, a womanizer, David Letterman’s favorite artist, and one of the true unsung heroes of rock n’ roll.
This bottle is for you Warren Zevon. You are still missed.
