Steven Soderbergh is set to direct The Girlfriend Experience, a low-budget feature that will focus on the world of prostitution from the view of a $10,000-a-night call girl. Soderbergh intends to use an adult film actress to play the lead role, reminiscent of how he shot Bubble with non-actors.
The film is financed by Mark Cuban’s 2929 Entertainment, through the HDNet label. It will be the second film after Bubble in their six-picture deal they made for Soderbergh to direct low-budget films that get released simultaneously on cable TV, DVD, and in theaters.

Crazy with the trailers tonight . . .
Also of interesting note, here’s the first official Dark Knight trailer paired up with the trailer for Tim Burton’s original Batman . . .
The writer of American Beauty presents his rehash of American Beauty.
After 13-year-old Jasira is sent to live with her father in Houston, she finds herself coming of age in the shadow of his old world, authoritarian ideas, which include a ban on tampons and a friendship with a boy who’s black. Trapped between her father’s rigidity and a wider culture that seems without rules, Jasira is left to handle puberty on her own, as well as her budding sexual desire and an ongoing longing for love and acceptance. Her creepy neighbor, Mr. Vuoso, senses her desires, and she responds eagerly to his sexual overtures. His willingness to eroticize her is heightened by how exotic—as well as distasteful—he finds her, a half–Middle Eastern child living in America on the eve of the first Gulf War. He hires Jasira to baby-sit for his son, and it’s clear that their relationship will destroy them.
Towelhead opens August 8.
As a Landmark employee, I was asked politely through e-mail by Sony Pictures Classics to not review The Wackness until its official release. So until then, I shall only say this -
The film deserves every bit of acclaim it receives.
And the above trailer is absolutely terrible mis-marketing.
The Wackness opens in Minneapolis at the Uptown Theater on July 11, and you all better be there.
Mojo Marshall: I don’t think Sony will have a problem with me saying it’s the most enjoyable film I’ve seen all year! We’ll have a full review in July when the film finally opens.
Thanks to Pitchfork for pointing this out.
Trailer for cult low-budget filmmaker Caveh Zahedi’s short film where he and Will Oldham took shrooms and hung out. If you’re unaware of Zahedi’s work, that’s how they usually tend to go.
Will Oldham’s new LP, Lie Down in the Lights, sees release on May 20.

Finally. Mark Verheiden’s My Name is Bruce, starring cult actor Bruce Campbell, has been in limbo for what seems like two years now, but now no longer - the film will hit theaters this October, with a DVD release in January 2009.
The plot revolves around Campbell, playing a sleazy version of himself, who, after being harassed and mistaken by fans to be a character much like Ash from the Evil Dead series of horror films, is abducted from his trailer park home to fight against Guan Yu, a Chinese war deity.

Big ups to Minneapolis Fucking Rocks for sharing this video. In it Slug shows off Fifth Element, Taylor Sound, and First Avenue while answering a few questions for MTVu guest interviewer Joe from UW Milwaukee.

Pointing the way to The Secret Device (which in turn points to a video blog about faeries), this awesome video is apparently related to Hellboy II: The Golden Army. The film’s marketing also had HETFET - Humans for the Ethical Treatment of Faeries, Elves, and Trolls - stage a protest march at the New York Comic Con.
Hellboy II: The Golden Army opens July 11.
Shot in March 2008 in Los Angeles by Jonnie Ross.
After a three month absence, Mitch updated Nothing Nice to Say today with a new comic about cocaine in the punk rock scene.
