Death Cab for Cutie - “Soul Meets Body”

Culture Bully got a chance to interview Minneapolis’ Tapes ‘n Tapes leader singer and guitarist Josh Grier.
Chris DeLine: When the band released the first single “Hang Them All” online it did so by offering a free version of the track via both mp3 and the audiophile-friendly FLAC formats. Typically an mp3 is enough to spark interest in new material, what inspired the rarely-seen FLAC release?
Josh Grier: We are all kind of audiophiles, so we thought it would be cool to offer up a really high quality version of the song (and get it as close to what it really sounds like) for any other audiophiles that might be out there.
CD: I remember searching for the band’s performance online shortly after it played The Late Show with David Letterman back in 2006 - the first video I found was a reaction video of sorts filmed of people watching the performance live at The Hexagon Bar. While the short video is a bit tedious and dry I think it shows that people were and are behind you for these sorts of moments. How did you feel before playing the show and can you compare it to your upcoming performance on Late Night with Conan O’Brien?
JG: I was excited and scared during Letterman. It was pretty crazy to be playing on a show that I watch all the time. I think Conan will be rad. I love Conan, and am super excited to for it. This time around, I think I’ll be a little more relaxed and get to enjoy it a bit more.
CD: The band will be playing an astounding twenty-nine dates on the first leg of its upcoming tour, all with the Austin-based trio of White Denim. What encouraged the decision to play with these guys?
JG: We really liked their EP (and had heard they were awesome live, and good guys). They were looking to go out on tour at the same time as us, and we were really glad it worked out for them to tour with us.

If you’re up for a 5 hour drive from Minneapolis to Iowa City…
The Mission Creek Festival returns to Iowa City for its third year. The dates are: April 2nd-5th. This four-day annual celebration takes over the venues and art spaces in downtown Iowa City, providing an easy-to-navigate nexus of music, literature, and visual art. The best part is: you can’t see bands like these in more intimate, down-home venues anywhere else around! Iowa City, the “writers’ town”, is just about as cozy as it gets. This year’s highlights include CURSIVE, BON IVER, DAN DEACON, THE HOOD INTERNET, NEVA DINOVA, BEN MARCUS, IOWA CITY DOC. FILM FEST, and more! This year we are also working with Daytrotter to expand the parameters of the festival. A series of Mission Creek Satellite Shows will be held in various parts of the nearby Quad Cities [Davenport and Rock Island] in conjunction with the Iowa City festival.
When: April 2-5
Where: Iowa City, IA
Cost: 4-day pass is $40 / 2-day weekend pass is $30.
Festival Lineup: HERE
Performance Schedule: HERE
The acts I’d check out: Cursive, Bon Iver, Dan Deacon, Evangelicals, MC/VL, Headlights, Vandaveer, Capgun Coup, and The Poison Control Center.
Daytrotter Acts: Spoon, The Walkmen, Blitzen Trapper, Fleet Foxes, and White Rabbits.

Some people happen to like writer/director Harmony Korine. This is for you, then.
Korine’s newest feature, Mister Lonely, has just nabbed a limited release date of May 2. The soundtrack, featuring Sun City Girls and J. Spaceman from Spaceman 3 and Spiritualized, will be released April 22 from Drag City.
The film follows, “a young American man lost in Paris. He scratches out a living as a Michael Jackson look-alike, dancing on the streets, public parks, tourist spots and trade shows. Different from everyone else, he feels as if he’s floating between two worlds. During a show in an old people’s home Michael Jackson meets Marilyn Monroe. Haunted by her angelic beauty he follows her to a commune in the Highlands, joining her husband Charlie Chaplin and her daughter Shirley Temple. A place where everyone is famous and no-one gets old. Here, The Pope, The Queen of England, Madonna, James Dean and other impersonators build a stage in the hope that the world will visit and watch them perform. Nuns fall out of airplanes and children ride ponies. Everything is beautiful. Until the world shifts, and reality intrudes on their utopian dream.”

Recently, CHUD happened to be attending a junket for the upcoming Forgetting Sarah Marshall, where writing/directing combo Jason Segel and Nick Stoller talked about what they’re planning for the new Muppet movie;
Apparently their Muppet film is going to be incredibly old fashioned, with the familiar Muppet characters putting on a show to save an old theater (the theater from The Muppet Show?). The danger? An evil character wants to tear the place down to get at the oil underneath.

No Use For A Name has a new record coming out tomorrow and what better way to get in the mood to buy it than by listening to a full album stream on NUFAN’s myspace page. The album, titled Feel Good Record of the Year, is exactly what you’d expect from NUFAN. It’s a fast, fun, blistering piece of mid-nineties pop punk radness.

Actor/rapper Mos Def will play rock n’ roll icon Chuck Berry in Cadillac Records, which is set in 1950s Chicago and follows the lives of Leonard Chess, founder of Chess Records, and the label’s artists, including Muddy Waters, Little Walter, and Howlin’ Wolf. Chess and his brother Phil started the company by traveling through the south, selling records out of the trunk of their Cadillac, hence the movie title.
As for the rest of the casting, Adrien Brody will play Chess, Jeffrey Wright is Muddy Waters, and Beyonce Knowles is Etta James. The film is currently shooting in New Jersey.

“On The Fly” is not on the album Accelerate. Still, it’s a beautiful song only heard live but who, in the end, didn’t made the cut to the album.
Watch the rest of R.E.M.’s fantastic Take Away Show performances HERE. Accelerate sees release tomorrow.
Former Moldy Peach Adam Green showed up to one of Germany’s highest rated talk shows completely shit-faced and gave an amazing interview. Words can’t even explain the awesomeness of it.
Presenting the next Asian cult film sensation. Samurai vs. zombies in a western setting and based on a video game. That’s about all you need, I guess. I expect this will actually hit the U.S. sometime in 2009.
You can read and watch a clip about the making of the video HERE.
RichmanVA: I can’t wait to see what this looks like in 3-D. This version is incredible looking on its own, so I can imagine it’s gonna be about 10 times better with 3-D glasses.
