“What is called the music business today, however, is not the business of producing music. At some point it became the business of selling CDs in plastic cases, and that business will soon be over. But that’s not bad news for music, and it’s certainly not bad news for musicians. Indeed, with all the ways to reach an audience, there have never been more opportunities for artists. Where are things going?”

Byrne: What about bands that are just getting started?
“Don’t sign a huge contract that strips you of all your digital rights …”
Yorke: Well, first and foremost, you don’t sign a huge record contract that strips you of all your digital rights, so that when you do sell something on iTunes you get absolutely zero. That would be the first priority. If you’re an emerging artist, it must be frightening at the moment. Then again, I don’t see a downside at all to big record companies not having access to new artists, because they have no idea what to do with them now anyway.
Byrne: It should be a load off their minds.
Yorke: Exactly.
Byrne: I’ve been asking myself: Why put together these things — CDs, albums? The answer I came up with is, well, sometimes it’s artistically viable. It’s not just a random collection of songs. Sometimes the songs have a common thread, even if it’s not obvious or even conscious on the artists’ part. Maybe it’s just because everybody’s thinking musically in the same way for those couple of months.
Yorke: Or years.
Byrne: However long it takes. And other times, there’s an obvious…
Yorke: … Purpose.
Byrne: Right. Probably the reason it’s a little hard to break away from the album format completely is, if you’re getting a band together in the studio, it makes financial sense to do more than one song at a time. And it makes more sense, if you’re going to all the effort of performing and doing whatever else, if there’s a kind of bundle.
Yorke: Yeah, but the other thing is what that bundle can make. The songs can amplify each other if you put them in the right order.
At one of the last stops on her solo Australian tour, Amanda Palmer was joined onstage by Trash McSweeney of The Red Paintings for an amazing version of the Tears For Fears song “Mad World.” Most of you will probably remember this song as performed by Gary Jules in the Movie Donnie Darko but the version Palmer & McSweeney do blow that one out of the water. McSweeney previously joined the Dolls for a performance of this song on the DVD released in 2006 called Dresden Dolls: Live at the Roundhouse.
Palmer finishes up her solo tour tonight and then will embark on a two week tour with her main gig, Cabaret punks, The Dresden Dolls.

Update (12.20.07):
Dear Mojo,
I just saw your blog for Crispin Glover.
I wanted to let your blog viewers know, that he’ll be screening What Is It? instead of - It is Fine! Everything IS FINE!
I just heard this morning from him. Since What is IT? hasn’t screened in MPLS, Mr. Glover wants to screen that film instead.
The crown king company of DVD releases just posted what they have in store for the month of March, which includes Antonio Gaudi, an avant-garde documentary about the famous architect directed by Hiroshi Teshigahara (Woman in the Dunes) with music by Japanese classical composer Toru Takemitsu.
Also in the new line-up is Alberto Lattuada’s dark Italian comedy Mafioso, and Ang Lee’s 1997 feature The Ice Storm.

“A modern day musical set on the streets of Dublin. Featuring Glen Hansard from the Irish band The Frames, [Once] tells the story of a street musician and a Czech immigrant during an eventful week as they write, rehearse and record songs that reveal their unique love story.”
