Friday, November 30th, 2007

A pair of new videos from the Danish duo the Raveonettes. The first video (above) is the studio version of “Dead Sound” that will appear on their early 2008 record Lust Lust Lust.

This second video below is an acoustic version of “Dead Sound” from the Black Cab Sessions:

Snoop Dogg - “Sensual Seduction” Video

Friday, November 30th, 2007

New Snoop Dogg video “Sensual Seduction” (f.k.a. “Sexual Eruption”) directed by Melina. Beat produced by Shawty Redd.

Smoke machines, disco balls, keytars, Auto-Tuned vocals and craptastic 80’s visual effects all make this D-O-double-G video H-O-double-T.

Snoop Dogg’s 9th solo record Ego Trippin’ is due out March 2008.

HijiNKS ENSUE vs. Universal Music CEO Doug Morris

Friday, November 30th, 2007

hijinksensue.com

Joel Watson of the webcomic HijiNKS ENSUE posted this hilarious comic yesterday in response to Doug Morris’ comments in the December issue of Wired Magazine:

“The record labels had an opportunity to create a digital ecosystem and infrastructure to sell music online, but they kept looking at the small picture instead of the big one,” Cohen says. “They wouldn’t let go of CDs.” It was a serious blunder, considering that MP3s clearly had the potential to break the major labels’ lock on distribution channels. Instead of figuring out a way to exploit the new medium, they alternated between ignoring it and launching lawsuits against the free file-sharing networks that cropped up to fill the void.

Morris insists there wasn’t a thing he or anyone else could have done differently. “There’s no one in the record company that’s a technologist,” Morris explains. “That’s a misconception writers make all the time, that the record industry missed this. They didn’t. They just didn’t know what to do. It’s like if you were suddenly asked to operate on your dog to remove his kidney. What would you do?”

Personally, I would hire a vet. But to Morris, even that wasn’t an option. “We didn’t know who to hire,” he says, becoming more agitated. “I wouldn’t be able to recognize a good technology person — anyone with a good bullshit story would have gotten past me.” Morris’ almost willful cluelessness is telling. “He wasn’t prepared for a business that was going to be so totally disrupted by technology,” says a longtime industry insider who has worked with Morris. “He just doesn’t have that kind of mind.”

The Thermals - “Returning to the Fold” Video

Thursday, November 29th, 2007

Portland’s post-pop-punkers the Thermals have released another video from their 2006 release The Body, The Blood, The Machine. This time it’s for their single “Returning to the Fold.” A simple video that shows the three-piece goofing off in front of a green-screen while Sub Pop flips the bill.

Two New Doomtree Records!

Doomtree

Hot damn! Bring some extra money to the Doomtree Blowout 3 on Friday, December 14th at First Avenue because there will be not one, but two new Doomtree records available to buy.

The first is the False Hopes debut from DJ Paper Tiger. It will include seven instrumentals and an eigth track featuring Dessa. You can preview some of new material on Paper Tiger’s MySpace page.

While we wait for the official Doomtree crew record to drop the hip-hop collective is releasing Doomtree: False Hopes, “a train wreck’s worth of outtakes and tidbits and remixes.”

I was hoping the new Mictlan record and an expanded version of Cecil Otter’s Rebel Yellow would also be out this year, but I guess 2008 will be the big year for new Doomtree material.

[Stream:] Doomtree - “Flex” is a new track from Doomtree: False Hopes that can be heard on Reveille Magazine’s website. The track features appearances by P.O.S., Sims, Dessa, and Mictlan. Production by Cecil Otter and MK Larada.

Tay Zonday - “Cherry Chocolate Rain” Commercial

Thursday, November 29th, 2007

(Via Stereogum)

Oh, my, god! I almost hate posting this because I’m playing right into the marketing strategy of the new Diet Cherry Chocolate Dr. Pepper (uh, that does not sound appetizing), but Tay Zonday is from Minneapolis and this video is too weird not to share, so I’ll play along. Okay Mr. Zonday, you’ve officially sold the fuck out and used up your 15 minutes. Write another “hit” or be considered an Internet meme for the rest of your life.

Murs - “Yesterday & Today” Video

Wednesday, November 28th, 2007

New Murs video for “Yesterday & Today” from the 9th Wonder produced Murray’s Revenge that dropped earlier this year. The video features a cameo from El-P looking extra dorky, a Say Anything homage, and old white guys doing a Soul Train dance. Always a recipe for success in my book.

[STREAM]: Murs - “Better Than the Best” from his forthcoming 2008 release Murs for President. The new single is currently streaming on his website.

Pitchfork Interview with Kevin Drew

Kevin Drew

Pitchfork had a great interview with Kevin Drew of Broken Social Scene fame earlier this week.

Kevin Drew: …”You can’t tell people how to listen to music. You just fucking listen to it. You don’t put your iPods on shuffle, you don’t even go to record stores any more. It’s great, people are finding more and more bands because of these great internet sites. But I fucking loved going down to the record stores and going to the listening stations and albums home and listening to them. I still hope people load their iPods with shit, and go driving for hours. People are listening to music! Good bands are selling records, good bands are getting noticed. We are in a vibrant place. Satellite radio? That shit is coming on strong, and that shit is saving radio. And all the bands writing commercials? There used to be a holy textbook about how you’re not allowed to do that, and it doesn’t exist anymore. Someone’s buried that. Commercials are becoming the new radio– it depends how much effort you want to spend. But people are listening to music. I’ve seen people find great bands through commercials and not give two shits.”

Wednesday, November 28th, 2007

Stereogum nailed it, “…something like The Boss meets Bad Santa, with a dash of Raising Arizona thrown in for good measure.”

The new single is available from the iTunes Store with proceeds benefiting the (Red) campaign.

Indie in One Minute

Wednesday, November 28th, 2007

I’ll be talking a lot about “Indie” music on this site. What the hell that means is a hot topic that’s getting harder to define as the months go by. Ironically AOL’s the DL Show recently did a nice overview of the term in this one minute video:

Switchblade Comb is Alive

Hello to everybody “around the world, around the world, around the world, around the world.”

The site will be going through a lot of changes in the coming weeks while I figure out the overall aesthetics and learn the ins-and-outs of Wordpress.
